- The Butcher’s Story
Vzlet, Vosto5, Moravian Theater Olomouc, Run Operun
A comic opera in three acts
South Specific 2026 – first time at the festival
The festival is held under the auspices of the mayor of the statutory city of České Budějovice.
Ritual welcoming of spring as an opportunity to investigate one’s own intestines.
Snow is slowly falling on the village. It is cold. And cruel hunger. Fortunately, there is a long-awaited event around the corner that will save everyone. The butcher will come, there will be a pig-killing!
As the old folk wisdom says, „Hungry is always sad, filling the belly is necessary“, and a piece of slop is the way out of every existential crisis. A butcher as a messenger of goodness, a butcher as a redeemer – and a Czech village full of striking characters.
The original opera is based on the Smetana’s tradition, but it comes at a time when most of the rural pigs have already lost the battle. For us, a contribution to Czech art during Lent means an opulent artistic feast with genuine opera singing, dance numbers, and even a children’s choir!
The project was co-produced by Vzlet, Vosto5, Moravian Theater Olomouc and RUN OPERUN with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
Czech and English subtitles.
