Immersive theater invites the audience to immerse themselves in the story being told. Its strength as a theatrical form lies in its ability to open up social issues, enable decision-making, and bring new experiences. How can such worlds be designed to be welcoming and poetic, while also being coherent, credible, and safe for everyone involved? This practical workshop is designed as an artistic laboratory. Led by Lin Kleingar and Rebekah Wild, participants will explore the key principles of immersive theater and begin their own performance development processes. The instructors will provide input from the fields of dramaturgy, directing, acting, scenography, and costume design, as well as object theater and puppetry. Emphasis will be placed on the interaction of materials, space, objects, costumes, and modes of performance with the aim of creating worlds that are not mere backdrops but become an integral part of the narrative. These approaches will be explored through practical exercises and discussions. In the second part of the workshop, participants will experiment with immersive concepts in small groups.
At the heart of the workshop is the fundamental question: What story do we want to tell—and how? Four intensive days invite participants to experiment, reflect, and take away practical tools for their own immersive creation processes—and to build worlds together. To make the workshop accessible to international participants, it will be held in English, but the workshop leader also speaks German if needed.
